Dermoscopy of pigmented lesions: a valuable tool in the diagnosis of melanoma.

چکیده
Although malignant melanoma is not the most frequent cancer, its incidence is increasing faster than any other. Early diagnosis of melanoma is particularly important because if the diagnosis is made at an early stage when the tumour thickness is less than 1 mm the prognosis is excellent. Dermoscopy is an in vivo method for the early diagnosis of melanoma and the differential diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the skin. It has been shown to increase diagnostic accuracy over clinical visual inspection in the hands of experienced physicians. This paper reviews the principles of dermoscopy, diagnostic strategies and recent technological developments.

Computer-aided dermoscopy for diagnosis of melanoma
BACKGROUND Computer-aided dermoscopy using artificial neural networks has been reported to be an accurate tool for the evaluation of pigmented skin lesions. We set out to determine the sensitivity and specificity of a computer-aided dermoscopy system for diagnosis of melanoma in Iranian patients. METHODS We studied 122 pigmented skin lesions which were referred for diagnostic evaluation or co...

Dermoscopy is a noninvasive, in vivo method for the early diagnosis of malignant melanoma and the differential diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the skin. By allowing visualization of sub-macroscopic pigmented structures that correlate with specific underlying histopathologic structures, dermoscopy provides a more powerful tool than the naked-eye examination for clinicians to determine the need...
متن کاملThe role of spectrophotometry in the diagnosis of melanoma
BACKGROUND Spectrophotometry (SPT) could represent a promising technique for the diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma (CM) at earlier stages of the disease. Starting from our experience, we further assessed the role of SPT in CM early detection. METHODS During a health campaign for malignant melanoma at National Cancer Institute of Naples, we identified a subset of 54 lesions to be addressed to su...

متن کاملAspects on in vivo imaging techniques for diagnostics of pigmented skin lesions
Problem: Non-invasive diagnostic techniques to facilitate diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions (PSL) are being developed. Dermoscopy and SIAscopy are two such techniques, and they are evaluated in this thesis. Aims: Pp I: To investigate if primary care physicians (PCPs) improve their ability to diagnose melanoma using dermoscopy after a short education intervention. Pp II: To describe relevant m...
